Just released yesterday morning, Google Art Project is a collaboration of leading art galleries and museums around the world and Google to share the collections with people around the world. Google used their Street View technology to take the viewer through the gallery, and to zoom in on selected artworks from each participating gallery. The artworks can be viewed at a high resolution, allowing you to explore each minute detail and see the paint strokes. On the right hand side is a panel you can expand, with a drop down box of options to learn more about the painting, from discussion of the context and subject matter, to a Google map of where it is located. You can also create your own artwork collection by signing into your Google account. Select your artwork, build a collection, write comments, and share with friends and family.
Google Art Project has it’s own YouTube Channel with videos.
A fun and informative resource, especially for those who do not have access to art databases or the opportunity to visit these galleries in person.
