State Libraries of Australia – Victoria State

On my recent trip to Australia I visited the State Libraries in Sydney and Melbourne. These are beautiful buildings with huge reference collections open to the public. The libraries appear to be well used, and extremely popular. The State Library of Victoria (Melbourne) had several excellent exhibits and free tours. My favourite exhibit was one on Australian childrens’ picture books. I have read several of the books that they illustrated, and it was simply wonderful to see the sketches, 3D models, and notes that the illustrators used and created for these wonderful works of art. It was particularly wonderful to see the 3D model that Jeannie Baker made for Where the Forest Meets the Sea. She spent so much time on this intricate model, and the photo of it in the picture book doesn’t do justice to the model in person! Amazing and so detailed!

If anyone is going to be in Melbourne, I would recommend going to see Look! The art of Australian picture books today
